How to choose a vase for your bouquet

Height

A reliable rule of thumb: the vase should be roughly half the height of the whole bouquet. A standard bunch of tulips or roses with 40–50 cm stems suits a vase 20–25 cm tall. For long stems of gladioli, lilies or eucalyptus, choose 35 cm and above.

The shape of the neck

The neck decides how the bouquet falls — and whether you will have to arrange it at all:

• Conical shapes widening towards the top open the bouquet into a fan on their own. The most versatile everyday choice.
• Rounded shapes with a narrowed neck hold the stems together. Ideal for low bouquets, single roses or peonies.
• Amphora shapes combine both — the narrow neck keeps stems upright, the flared rim lets them open out.
• Wavy rims spread the stems sideways, so even a few flowers look generous.

Clear or white glass?

A clear vase stays in the background and lets the flowers do the work — it goes with everything and never tires. A matt white vase with a relief pattern is a decoration in its own right: it holds attention even empty, and pairs best with simple greenery or white blooms that do not compete with the texture.

Caring for glass vases

Change the water every two days and rinse the vase each time — the biofilm that builds up on the walls shortens the life of a bouquet more than anything else. Dried residue and limescale dissolve in warm water with vinegar; use a bottle brush for narrow necks. Hand-shaped glass is best washed by hand rather than in a dishwasher.
