Which type of car fragrance to choose
How the fragrance is released matters more than the scent itself. The three common types behave quite differently:
- Vent-grille diffuser — the air from your ventilation spreads the scent, so you control the intensity simply by how hard the fan runs. Nothing hangs in your line of sight, nothing swings through corners. Refills are replaceable; the body lasts for years.
- Hanging fragrance for the mirror — the classic everyone knows. Cheaper and simpler, but it swings and it shows. A good way to try a scent, or to give as a small gift.
- Fragrance in a tin under the seat — discreet, long-lasting and out of the way. The intensity can be adjusted with the lid.
Choose by scent, not by packaging
In the enclosed space of a car you smell a fragrance far more strongly than in a room — and you breathe it for hours at a time. It pays to pick something more restrained than you would choose for home:
- Citrus — fresh, uplifting, universal. The safest choice when buying as a gift for someone whose taste you don't know.
- Woody — cedar, sandalwood, vetiver. Dry and grounding, the classic for anyone who cannot stand sweet scents.
- Oriental and balsamic — warm, with undertones of spice and resin. At their best in autumn and winter.
- Clean and powdery — the scent of fresh laundry or soap. Understated, overwhelming nobody, ideal for a company car.
Avoid distinctly sweet and fruity compositions if you spend a lot of time in the car — they are pleasant for the first week and then start to grate. And be careful with intensity if you drive with children or with anyone prone to migraines.
How long a fragrance lasts
It depends on the type and how much you drive. Diffuser refills usually last four to six weeks; hanging fragrances rather less. Heat shortens their life considerably — a bottle or refill left on the dashboard in direct sun evaporates several times faster. Keep it away from the windscreen.
Safety and composition
The fragrance blends we stock are developed specifically for diffusers and certified to IFRA standards, free of phthalates and parabens. That is not a given — with cheap air fresheners the composition is often hard to find at all.
All products are decorative and not intended for consumption. Keep them out of reach of children and avoid contact with eyes and skin. The full hazard statements, the list of allergenic components and the UFI code are always printed on the packaging of the individual product.
