The heather blooms and the house fills with the scent of a summer forest. Sweet and honeyed, with a floral undertone.

The lower version of the popular Munio candle — the same diameter, half the height. Hand-poured from a blend of soy and rapeseed wax and decorated with heather flowers from Latvian forests. It burns into a tunnel, so the flame lights up the dried flowers inside.

Why soy and rapeseed wax?

Soy and rapeseed wax are both plant-based, renewable and biodegradable. Unlike paraffin they burn cleanly, without sooting, and release nothing left over from petroleum refining. They also burn considerably more slowly, so the candle lasts longer. Don't throw away the wax left over from the walls: put it in a cotton bag in your wardrobe, or break it into pieces for a wax warmer.

How to burn the candle properly

• Before the first burn, trim the wick to 1 cm and let the candle burn until most of the surface has melted.
• Trim the wick to 1 cm before every subsequent burn — a longer wick will soot.
• Never burn the candle for more than 3–4 hours at a time, and never unattended.
• Place it on a heat-resistant surface away from draughts, flammable materials and out of reach of children and pets.
• The candle burns into a tunnel — a wax wall about a centimetre thick remains around the flame to protect the dried flowers from the fire. It may crack and open like a blossom as the candle burns. That is how it is meant to be.
• Soy wax may crack slightly when temperatures fluctuate. This affects neither the burn nor the fragrance.

Munio is a family-run Latvian workshop in Riga that has been making candles and natural cosmetics by hand, in small batches, since 2008. The flowers and herbs in the candles are gathered in the meadows and forests of northern Latvia. No paraffin, no synthetic dyes, and packaging of recyclable card and glass.
